Triq il-Vittorja (Victory Street)

Victory Street runs the length of Senglea's peninsula, a single straight axis from the bastions at the inland end to the Gardjola at the tip. It is barely wide enough for a single car. Walking it slowly takes ten minutes; doing it properly, looking up at the painted timber balconies and the small niches with Madonna statues, takes most of an hour.

The street is at its best in the early morning before the cruise-ship daytrippers arrive from Valletta, or after sunset when residents bring chairs out onto their doorsteps. Almost every doorway has a small religious shrine; some are 17th century, most are 19th or 20th, and several are still lit at night.
