Mdina Dungeons

The Mdina Dungeons occupy the medieval vaults and prison cells beneath the square just inside the main gate, and present Maltese history through a series of dramatic life-sized tableaux. The exhibits cover the Arab occupation, the Inquisition, piracy in the Mediterranean, and various episodes of plague and punishment with rather more gusto than academic rigour.

It is unapologetically popular — the combination of wax figures, darkness, and theatrical sound effects appeals to families and those who want a theatrical introduction to the island's turbulent past. For more serious students of Maltese history, the Cathedral Museum a few streets away will be more rewarding. The dungeons work best as an entertainment rather than an education.

The attraction is located directly inside the Mdina Gate and is well-signposted. Visits take around 45 minutes.
