Ħaġar Qim Temples

Massive 5,500-year-old megalithic temple on a sea cliff

The larger of the two temple complexes near Qrendi, Ħaġar Qim stands on the edge of a limestone ridge with views down to the sea. The megalithic blocks are enormous — the largest weighs over 20 tonnes — and the builders had only stone tools and human muscle. The site includes an outer forecourt, multiple apse chambers, and several altars, some decorated with pitted relief carving. A tensioned canopy protects the soft globigerina limestone from further weathering. Open daily; combined ticket with Mnajdra.

A story
On the spring and autumn equinoxes, sunlight passes through a specific hole in the outer wall of Ħaġar Qim and projects a perfect disc of light onto a slab inside — a moment that has repeated every equinox for over 5,500 years.
