Mnajdra Temples

Three solstice-aligned megalithic temples above the sea cliffs

Five hundred metres from Ħaġar Qim along a clifftop path, Mnajdra is three interconnected temples built in slightly different periods, the earliest dating to around 3600 BC. The South Temple is the most precisely aligned: at the winter and summer solstices, the rising sun shines directly along its central axis; at the equinoxes, it illuminates the edges of specific megaliths. Whether this was deliberate astronomical observation or a happy accident has been debated for decades — the precision is too exact for coincidence. The setting, above low sea cliffs with Filfla island visible offshore, is superb.
