Church of St Matthew at Il-Maqluba

Two churches dedicated to St Matthew stand side by side on the rim of the Maqluba sinkhole: a tiny medieval chapel — locally called San Mattew iż-Żgħir, "the smaller" — and a larger baroque parish chapel built in the seventeenth century when the original was deemed too small for the growing village. The pairing is unusual and pleasantly atmospheric, both buildings in dressed limestone with the sinkhole gaping behind.

The interior of the larger church is usually only opened for the patronal feast of St Matthew in late September; the smaller medieval chapel is rarely open at all. But the exterior, the wide forecourt, and the sinkhole behind them make a fine short stop on a walk through Qrendi.
