Sheriff Complex

The Sheriff brand is impossible to miss in Tiraspol. The chain's supermarkets are stocked with Russian goods — a combination of nostalgia and political reality — at prices well below those in Chisinau. Sheriff also runs petrol stations throughout the republic, a mobile network, restaurants, and several large business centres. The company's grip on the Transnistrian economy is so complete that economists describe the republic as less a state than a Sheriff subsidiary with a flag and an army.

The Sheriff football stadium on the western edge of the city is the most modern sports facility in Moldova, Transnistrian or otherwise. Sheriff Tiraspol regularly qualifies for UEFA competition and caused a minor sensation by defeating Real Madrid 2-1 in the 2021 Champions League group stage. Tours of the stadium are available; check locally for times.

A story
Sheriff is the private company that owns most of Transnistria's economy — the supermarkets, the petrol stations, the mobile phone network, the football club (Sheriff Tiraspol, which memorably beat Real Madrid in the 2021 Champions League group stage), and the main sports arena. It was founded in the early 1990s by two former Soviet security officers. Nobody knows precisely who owns Sheriff, but most observers assume the answer involves the Transnistrian security apparatus.
