Bergkerk

The Bergkerk — properly the Sint-Nicolaaskerk — is the church on the hill, a Romanesque-Gothic building with twin towers rising above the eastern edge of the old town. The hill it sits on (the Bergkwartier, literally "mountain quarter") is barely a hill at all by international standards, but in the flat Dutch landscape it counts.

The church itself is now deconsecrated and used as an exhibition space; the regular shows are good. The real reason to come is the surrounding Bergkwartier, an exceptionally well-preserved late-medieval district of crooked alleys, gabled merchant houses and small squares — saved from demolition in the 1960s by a celebrated local restoration campaign. The view from the church tower covers the whole of Deventer; tower access is seasonal.

A story
The Bergkerk's two towers lean slightly inward at the top — a deliberate medieval optical trick to make them appear taller from the street below, which only really works if you stand directly between them on the Bergstraat.
