Deventer Book Market

On the first Sunday of August, Deventer hosts what is widely cited as the biggest open-air book market in Europe: around 850 booksellers from across the continent set up stalls along the IJssel quays and through the old town, attracting 125,000 visitors and offering, in aggregate, hundreds of thousands of books. The range goes from euro-a-piece paperbacks to genuine antiquarian treasures.

The market opens at 9:30 and runs until 6 p.m. Cash is still useful at the smaller stalls, although most accept cards now. Serious collectors come early; for casual browsers the afternoon, when prices begin to soften, is more rewarding. There are also small spin-off events through the weekend including author talks, themed readings and music in the surrounding cafes.

A story
The Deventer Book Market once held the Guinness record for the largest book market in Europe — six kilometres of book stalls along the IJssel, and an estimated 750,000 books on a single Sunday. The unofficial competition for first-edition Dickens here is fierce; the first Pickwick Papers exchanged hands for €11,000 in 2012.
