The Speeltoren is a leaning bell tower from 1509, detached from the church it once served — the original Sint Nicolaaskerk was torn down after a fire and the congregation moved to the current Grote Kerk, leaving this tower standing alone near the Kwakelbrug. It tilts about two degrees off vertical, enough to be noticeable but not alarming.
The tower houses a 17th-century carillon of 26 bells that plays on the quarter-hour; the mechanism is original. You cannot climb the tower but the view from outside is pleasing — the leaning profile against the canal is one of Edam's most-photographed scenes. The bridge beside it, the Kwakelbrug, is a good spot to watch canal traffic and small boats heading out to the IJsselmeer.
