The 17th-century weigh house on the Kaasmarkt is the visual centrepiece of Edam and the site of the summer cheese market. The building itself is small and rather elegant — a step-gabled facade over a canal, with the mechanism for lowering the weighing scales still visible inside.
The ground floor is now a small cheese museum where you can watch an old film of the market in its working days and handle replica cheese rounds. The basement shows the historic weighing apparatus. It takes about twenty minutes to see properly, and the staff tend to be enthusiastic.
