Hunebed D45 stands in the Emmerdennen forest, just north of the centre. These megalithic tombs are the symbol of Drenthe: 5,000-year-old burial chambers built from boulders left by the ice ages.
D45 is one of the better-preserved examples near Emmen, and the forest setting helps. It is a short, quiet visit rather than a big-ticket sight, but it connects the modern city to a much older Hondsrug landscape.
