PC Kaatsen Tournament

The Permanente Commissie tournament, held on the Sjûkelân field on the last Wednesday of July, is the most prestigious annual event in Frisian kaatsen — the local form of hand tennis. The PC has been held continuously since 1854 (during wartime it ran in restricted form), making it one of the oldest annual sporting events in the world.

For one day the town fills with bunting, white-clad players, and serious Frisian fans who follow the matches with the intensity given to Test cricket. Outside the tournament week, the Sjûkelân is just a quiet grass field at the edge of the centre, with a small statue commemorating past champions.

A story
Kaatsen, a hand-tennis game with rules that have barely changed in five hundred years, is genuinely native to Friesland — versions of it predate the modern Dutch state. The PC, played on the Sjûkelân in Franeker on the last Wednesday of July, draws crowds of thousands and is one of the few sporting occasions in the Netherlands where Frisian is the dominant language.
