Stadsmuseum Harderwijk is the best place to understand why this small city mattered. The museum covers the town's Hanseatic trading past, its old university, fishing history, and the way the former Zuiderzee shaped daily life.
Go early in your visit if you like old towns. It makes the streets, harbour, and surviving gate feel less like scenery and more like part of a working history.
