Abe Lenstra Stadion

The home of SC Heerenveen, the Eredivisie football club that has been a fixture of the Dutch top flight for three decades. The stadium holds around 27,000 in tightly packed stands, and the atmosphere on match days is one of the more pleasant in the league — Friesland turns up in numbers, sings in West Frisian, and brings flasks of coffee.

The club shop and the small SC Heerenveen museum at the south end are open on non-match days. Tours of the stadium can usually be booked through the club. If you can time a visit with a home fixture, do — tickets are easier to come by than at the bigger Randstad clubs and the football is honest.

A story
The stadium is named after Abe Lenstra (1920–1985), a Frisian striker so revered locally that when he retired the club retired with him for a season. His statue stands outside the south stand.
