Lemsterpoort

The north water gate, with the town's small original cannon

The Lemsterpoort is the north water gate of Sloten, where the central canal meets the open polder on the road to Lemmer. It is not a building you walk through, but a stone arch and bridge with iron portcullis grooves still visible in the masonry. A small bronze cannon sits beside it on a stone carriage — one of two that flanked the town in the 17th century.

The gate is the natural starting point for the loop walk along the ramparts. The view back into the town along the canal — with the windmill rising over the line of gables — is the classic Sloten composition.

A story
The two cannons by Sloten's gates were never fired in anger. They were cast in the 1670s during the Franco-Dutch War, when Sloten's tiny garrison briefly held off French scouts probing northward from the IJsselmeer. The cannons have been pointed at the same patch of canal ever since.
