Stadhûs Sleat Museum

A small city museum in the 18th-century town hall

The Stadhûs Sleat museum occupies the former town hall of Sloten — a modest 18th-century building on the canal, just steps from the central bridge. The exhibits cover the unlikely story of how a town this small ever earned city rights, the role of Sloten in the Elfsteden ice-skating tradition, and an unexpectedly large collection of magic-lantern slides from the 19th and 20th centuries. A working magic lantern is set up in a small darkroom and projects a different historical slide show each season.

It is the kind of museum that takes forty-five minutes to see properly, and is a good way to fill the middle of a wet afternoon. Open daily except Mondays from April to October; modest admission.
