The Groeneplaats — literally "Green Square" — is the centre of Den Burg and the meeting point of every road on the island. Surrounded by cafes, restaurants, the town hall, and the Hervormde Kerk a block away, it is where Texelaars gather and visitors orient themselves. The square is shaded by chestnut trees and good for sitting with an ice cream or a beer for an hour.
On Mondays through the summer (and most of the year, in reduced form) it hosts the weekly market: stalls of cheese, fish, smoked sausage, vegetables, flowers, second-hand books, and Texel-grown wool. The market runs roughly 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is the only time Den Burg feels properly busy. Combine it with lunch on one of the surrounding terraces.
