Karmelklooster

The former Carmelite monastery, built in 1932 in a sober interwar brick style, stands on the north side of the village just back from the Ee. The Carmelites left in the 1990s and the building has since been converted into apartments and a small hotel, but the complex is still recognisable as a monastery — the chapel, the cloister, and the long arcades are preserved.

You cannot wander freely inside, but the chapel is sometimes open to visitors and the courtyard is worth a brief detour from the canal walk. It is one of the larger 20th-century buildings in this part of Friesland and gives an unexpected sense of scale in an otherwise small village.
