Nationaal Videogame Museum

The Nationaal Videogame Museum is exactly what it claims to be: the Netherlands' dedicated archive of video game history, housed across multiple floors in central Zoetermeer. The collection spans five decades, from the earliest arcade machines and home computers of the 1970s and 1980s through the full progression of console generations, and the vast majority of exhibits are playable.

The museum is well-curated, with context on how games evolved alongside Dutch and European gaming culture. Entire rooms are dedicated to specific eras: you can sit at a BBC Micro or an Amiga 500, play Donkey Kong on original hardware, or work through a history of Dutch game development. For anyone who grew up with games — or who wants to understand why people did — it is genuinely fascinating. For families with children, it is also simply very fun. Allow two to three hours, more if you played any of these machines as a child.

A story
The museum opened in 2016 in a converted building in Zoetermeer's Stadshart and holds thousands of playable exhibits spanning more than five decades of gaming history — from Pong-era hardware to early home computers to the console generations. Everything works. Nothing is behind glass.
