Bossekop

Bossekop is one of the three historic districts that make up the town of Alta, sitting on the western side of the town centre near the Altafjord. It has a longer history than the rebuilt town centre — the German forces that burned Alta in 1944 destroyed much of it, but Bossekop retains its character as the older, more established part of town.

The area along the fjord is pleasant for walking, with views across the water and several restaurants and cafes nearby. The Bossekop Market, traditionally held in January, is one of the oldest and largest markets in Finnmark.

A story
The name Bossekop comes from the Kven word for "market bay" — reflecting the town's role as a trading post where Norwegian, Sami, Finnish, and Russian merchants met to exchange goods. The area's multi-ethnic history is still reflected in the three names it carries: Bossekop in Norwegian, Bossogohppi in Northern Sami, and Possukoppa in Kven.
