Alta is one of the best places in Norway to go dog sledding — the open plateau of Finnmark stretches for hundreds of kilometres in every direction, the terrain is ideal, and the operators based here have access to wilderness that most places can't offer. Trips range from two-hour introductory runs to multi-day expeditions across the plateau with overnight stays in remote cabins.
Several operators run trips out of Alta and the surrounding area, including Sorrisniva, Holmen Husky, and Arctic Adventure of Norway. The main season is December through March. Evening dog sled trips are particularly atmospheric when combined with Northern Lights watching.
