Northern Lights Cathedral

Alta's most striking piece of modern architecture spirals up from the town centre in titanium and glass — a deliberate reference to the aurora borealis that draws visitors to this part of Finnmark. Designed by the architectural firm Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter and completed in 2013, the Northern Lights Cathedral (Nordlyskatedralen) serves as Alta's main church while also functioning as a cultural landmark.

The interior is worth a visit: the main nave rises into a soaring pointed vault, and the stained glass plays with the Arctic light in interesting ways. The viewing platform near the top offers a panorama over the town and the Altafjord. Services are held regularly; check ahead if you want to attend one, or simply visit during opening hours for the architecture.

A story
The cathedral's shape is deliberately spiral — the architect intended it to evoke both the aurora borealis and a fish tail, referencing Alta's dual identity as a Northern Lights destination and a salmon river town. The titanium panels on the exterior change colour with the light, shifting from silver to gold to rose depending on the time of day and the weather.
