Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel

The world's northernmost ice hotel sits on the banks of the Alta River about 20 kilometres upstream from town. Rebuilt each winter from ice and snow cut from the river, Sorrisniva offers ice rooms where guests sleep on reindeer skins under Arctic-grade sleeping bags at temperatures well below zero, as well as an ice bar, ice chapel, and elaborately carved ice sculptures throughout the complex.

You don't have to sleep here to visit — day tours and evening visits to the ice bar are popular. The hotel also runs dog sledding, snowmobile, and Northern Lights trips. The season runs roughly from late November through April, depending on snow conditions. It is a deliberately theatrical experience, but it's done well.

A story
The hotel is rebuilt from scratch every November, using hundreds of tonnes of snow and ice harvested from the Alta River. Each room is carved by a different artist, and the art changes every year — so guests who return find a completely different structure. By May, it melts back into the river.
