Arendal's character is shaped by the sea. The old town on the Tyholmen peninsula, the harbour full of wooden boats in summer, the island ferry out to Merdø, and the coastal scenery of the Raet National Park all reward time spent here. In summer it becomes a lively gathering point for Norwegians; in other seasons it's quiet and uncrowded, with the same beautiful coastline to explore.
