Svanøy is a fertile island a short ferry ride south of Florø, notable for its old estate and deer farm. The Svanøy estate, which dates back to the eighteenth century, is one of the best-preserved manor properties in western Norway. The grounds include a park and gardens that were laid out in the English landscape style, an unusual sight this far north. White-tailed deer roam the island and are often spotted near the shoreline or in the meadows around the estate.
The island has a quiet, unhurried feel that contrasts with even the modest bustle of Florø. Locals come for walks and picnics; visitors tend to stay long enough to miss the ferry and have to wait for the next one, which is not the worst thing that could happen. Check ferry times carefully before you go — the service is not frequent.
