Haraldshaugen is Norway's national monument to the unification of the kingdom under Harald Fairhair. It was erected in 1872 for the thousand-year commemoration of the Battle of Hafrsfjord and stands on a mound at Gard, about two kilometres north of central Haugesund.
The monument is stark rather than pretty: a tall granite obelisk ringed by smaller stones, one for each historic county. The setting matters. Wind, grass, sea air, and the open mound make it feel like a national symbol placed back into the coastal landscape that produced the story.
