The Heddøla flows past the stave church and down through the valley before joining the Tinnelva on its way to Lake Heddalsvatnet. Short walking paths follow stretches of the river through farmland and woodland, and the small fishing-and-picnic spots along its banks make a pleasant afternoon for visitors who linger longer than the church demands.
The salmon run is small but visible from the bridges in late summer.
