The Hemsila river that runs through the length of the Hemsedal valley is one of the better trout rivers in southern Norway. Brown trout and grayling are the main species, and the river produces good catches throughout the summer season from June through September. The best fishing is in the early morning and evening — the river fishes well at any point of the day, but the largest fish are more active when the light is low.
Fishing permits are required and are available from the municipality and from several of the local sport and outdoor shops in the valley. The permit system covers different stretches of the river, and local knowledge matters: some beats are considerably more productive than others, and the shop staff will point you in the right direction. Fly fishing is the predominant method, though spinning is permitted on most stretches.
The river is at its most spectacular in autumn, when the birch trees on the valley sides turn gold, the water runs cold and clear, and the fish are feeding aggressively before the winter. September is the best month for combining good fishing with autumn colour.
