Rjukandefossen is a double waterfall near the village of Tuv in the Hemsedal valley, dropping around 18 metres in two stages over a basalt ledge. It is one of the more accessible natural features in the area — a short walk from the road through birch forest — and particularly impressive in spring when the snowmelt swells the flow to its maximum. The name means "the smoking waterfall" in Norwegian, which refers to the mist cloud that rises above it in full spate.
The waterfall is part of the Hemsila river system that runs through the valley and empties into the Hallingdal lake system to the south. The same river that feeds Rjukandefossen is one of the best trout fishing rivers in Buskerud county, and fishing permits are available from the local management body. In winter, the falls freeze partially and the ice formations are a draw for ice climbers with the right skills and equipment.
