Henningsvær Stadion

The football pitch at Henningsvær may be the most dramatically situated sporting ground in the world. Wedged onto a narrow islet between two arms of the fjord, it has open Arctic water on three sides and the jagged Lofoten peaks rising behind the goal. From above — and photographs of it circulate constantly online — it looks almost impossibly improbable.

The pitch is fully functional and used by the local club Henningsvær IL. There's no visitor centre, no entry fee, no ticketing — you just walk out and stand on it. The best view is from the rocks above, accessible via a short scramble. Come in the evening light of a Lofoten summer and you'll understand why it has become one of Norway's most photographed spots.

A story
Officially called Engelsvoll, the pitch sits on a narrow rock finger jutting into the Vestfjord, surrounded by open water on three sides. UEFA filmed here for a campaign video, and Pepsi ran a promotion with paint-covered footballs before the 2018 Champions League Final. But most days it's just local kids playing football with mountains and fjord as their backdrop.
