Skomvær and the surrounding skerries hold one of the densest concentrations of seabirds in Norway. Puffins, kittiwakes, common guillemots, razorbills, shags, and Atlantic fulmars all nest here in numbers that have declined sharply since the 1970s but remain spectacular by any reasonable measure. White-tailed eagles patrol the cliffs.
The best time to visit is late May through mid-July, when the colonies are at their loudest and the birds are easiest to see at close range. Outside that window the cliffs are largely empty. Bring binoculars and a wind-proof shell; even on a calm day the spray on the outer rocks is constant.
