The old coastal footpath from Unstad to Eggum is one of the finest short hikes in Lofoten — about 5 km one way, along cliff tops with views across to the outer islands and down onto rocky coves. The path is well-marked and manageable in good conditions, though sections can be muddy after rain. It attracts everyone from serious hikers to families with children, and the contrast between the exposed coast and the sheltered valleys inland is striking throughout.
Eggum itself is a small, quiet community at the end of a minor road. The beach is made up of large, smooth pebbles rather than sand, and the surrounding cliffs have a raw, dramatic quality. The Markus Raetz sculpture stands on the headland above the beach, worth the short detour for the views alone. A small fishing museum in the village documents the community's maritime history.
