The Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg is the undisputed highlight of Vestvagoy and one of the finest Viking Age sites in Scandinavia. A full-scale reconstruction of the longhouse — 83 metres from end to end — stands on the original foundations, giving a visceral sense of how enormous and sophisticated these buildings actually were. Inside, the re-created great hall, chieftain's quarters, and animal stalls bring the Iron Age to life without resorting to kitsch.
The museum sits on the edge of a long lake, and the approach from the car park, with mountains behind and water in front, sets the scene well. Alongside the longhouse, there's a replica Viking ship moored in the adjacent boathouse — visitors can join sailing trips during summer. Costumed interpreters demonstrate crafts including iron-working, weaving, and bread-baking; the quality of the demonstration varies by season, but at peak summer it's genuinely absorbing. Plan for at least two hours.
