King Crab House

The King Crab House in Skarsvåg offers the most direct experience of what the Barents Sea produces: live king crab caught in pots a short distance from the village, cooked simply and served in a room overlooking the cove. The crabs are enormous — legs can span a metre — and the meat is sweet, dense, and needs almost nothing added to it beyond drawn butter and bread.

Most visitors combine a boat trip to the crab pots with the meal. The trip takes about an hour: you motor out to where the pots are set, haul them up, and select your crab from what comes up. Back at the dock, the crab goes into the pot, and you eat it at a communal table with the harbour in front of you. The experience is straightforward and unhurried — there is no performance or theatrics, just the sea, the boats, and the crab.

Booking ahead is necessary in summer, when the road to the North Cape brings a steady stream of travellers who have done their research. In winter, when the village is quieter and the road occasionally closes, the operation continues for the hardier visitors who make the trip specifically for this.
