Barentsburg Chapel is a small wooden Orthodox chapel, plain and moving in its Arctic setting. It was built in memory of the 140 people killed in the 1996 plane crash near Longyearbyen, many of them miners and family members travelling to Barentsburg.
It is not an elaborate church, but it gives the settlement a human centre beyond the mine and murals.
