The hillside sign above Barentsburg reads "Миру Мир" — roughly "Peace to the World" — beside a large five-pointed star. It is part landmark, part ideology, and part weather marker.
In winter, locals use the reappearance of the star in daylight as a sign that the polar night is ending. From town, it frames the settlement's Soviet mood better than any plaque could.
