Lipnica Murowana

UNESCO-listed wooden church village, 20km south of Bochnia

Lipnica Murowana is a small village in the Carpathian foothills, 20km south of Bochnia, and the unlikely setting for a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The wooden Church of St Leonard, built around 1500, is one of six surviving log-built churches of southern Lesser Poland inscribed together — a fine example of Gothic carpentry, dark with age, with painted polychrome interiors.

The village itself is unusually picturesque, with a complete medieval market square and several other historic wooden houses. Visit in the warmer months when the church is open. Combine with Nowy Wiśnicz for a full day in the southern Bochnia countryside.

A story
The wooden church of St Leonard is one of six in the Małopolska region inscribed by UNESCO. Built around 1500, its log walls have stood through 500 winters in the Carpathian foothills — and the entire roof is held together without a single iron nail.
