Market Square

Brodnica's market square (Rynek) is one of the rarest survivals of medieval Polish town planning — a triangular plaza rather than the usual rectangle. The shape follows the lines of an older Slavic trading place absorbed into the Teutonic foundation of 1298.

The buildings around the square are a mix of 18th- and 19th-century townhouses with restored facades, several of them with arcades at street level. The town hall on the south side now houses a regional museum. The square is the social heart of Brodnica, with cafés and small shops, and is the obvious place to start an afternoon's wander.

A story
Brodnica's triangular market is one of only a handful of triangular medieval squares in Poland — the standard form is a rectangle. The unusual shape is thought to follow the lines of an older Slavic trading settlement that pre-dated the Teutonic refoundation in 1298.
