Brodnica

Northern Polish town with a triangular market square, Teutonic castle remains, and Drwęca river setting.

Brodnica is a town in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in northern Poland, on the Drwęca river. It has a modest medieval core that makes it worth a stop if you are travelling through this part of the country.

The main sights are the unusually triangle-shaped old marketplace — a rarity in Poland where most market squares are rectangular — and the remains of a Teutonic Knights castle dating from the 14th century, including a well-preserved tower that can be climbed. The town is not a major tourist destination, but it has a genuine old centre and the surrounding Brodnica Lakeland offers kayaking on the Drwęca river, which is popular with Polish canoeists in summer.
