Getting Around

Trains

Poland has an extensive rail network operated mainly by PKP Intercity for long-distance routes and POLREGIO for regional services. The intercity trains are fast, comfortable, and good value. Key services:

  • EIP / EIC / IC trains — the fastest and most comfortable. Cover Warsaw–Krakow (2.5 hours), Warsaw–Gdansk (2.5 hours), and Warsaw–Wroclaw (3.5 hours). Seat reservations required and included in the ticket price.
  • TLK trains — cheaper, slower, and stop more often. A good budget option for longer distances.
  • POLREGIO — local and regional trains for shorter hops and rural areas.

Buy tickets online at intercity.pl or via the PKP app. Prices use dynamic pricing, so booking ahead — especially for weekend travel on popular routes — saves money. If you're crossing between cities on the weekend, book at least a few days in advance.

Buses

FlixBus and Polish regional bus companies cover many routes that trains don't reach well, especially in the lake districts (Mazury) and mountain regions. For Zakopane in the Tatras, buses from Krakow are often faster and more frequent than trains. PKS regional buses still serve smaller towns, though services have thinned out over the years.

City Transport

Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Poznan, and other major cities all have good public transport — trams, buses, and in Warsaw a metro. Tickets are cheap and can usually be bought on platforms or via apps. Validate your ticket when you board.

Car

Renting a car makes sense for exploring the countryside — the lake districts, the Bieszczady mountains in the southeast, or castle routes through Silesia. Roads have improved enormously since EU accession but some rural roads are still slow. Fuel is affordable. Driving in city centres is not recommended due to traffic and parking difficulties.

Taxis and Ridesharing

Bolt and Uber both operate in Polish cities and are cheap. Local taxi firms also exist — use an app or book by phone to avoid overcharging at taxi ranks. At airports, use licensed taxis or book via app.
