A short walk from the cathedral, the Church of St. John the Baptist is one of Gniezno's older parish churches, with roots going back to the medieval period. The building is Gothic in character, with a solid brick nave that sits quietly in the shadow of its more famous neighbour without competing with it. Inside, fragments of medieval frescoes survive — faded but legible — giving the interior a texture that newer restorations tend to erase.
Most visitors to Gniezno walk past it on the way to the cathedral and don't stop. That's their loss. The church rewards a few minutes of attention: the stonework, the proportions of the nave, and the general sense of accumulated history make it worth ducking inside. It sees far fewer tourists than the cathedral and is usually peaceful, which is its own kind of appeal.
