Lake Balaton

Sosnowiec's Lake Balaton — named with the tongue-in-cheek local humor of industrial Silesia, presumably to mock the gap between a Hungarian resort lake and a reservoir in a mining district — is a genuinely pleasant urban green space. The lake and surrounding park offer walking paths, benches, and a view of water and trees that provides real breathing room in an otherwise built-up city.

It's a working-class park in the best sense: unpretentious, well-used, and not trying to be anything it isn't. On summer evenings, families picnic on the banks and teenagers cycle the paths. Combined with Lake Stawiki and Lake Leśna, the city has three such lakes within its boundaries — more green space than most Polish industrial cities of comparable size.
