Schön Palace (Sosnowiec Museum)

Schön Palace is a handsome neo-Baroque manor built in 1896 for a German textile manufacturing family. It now houses the Sosnowiec Museum, whose permanent collection covers the history of the city and the Zagłębie region: industrial artifacts, period furniture, maps, and documents tracing three centuries of migration, industry, and political upheaval in Upper Silesia.

The building itself is the best reason to visit — fine plasterwork, a well-preserved staircase, and rooms that still feel domestic rather than institutional. The museum's exhibitions on the Jewish community that once made Sosnowiec one of the most cosmopolitan towns in Russian-controlled Poland are particularly worth seeking out.

A story
The palace was built by the Schön family, German industrialists who made their fortune in textiles during the 19th-century boom that transformed this corner of Silesia. The family's fate — wealthy industrialists from an ethnic minority who thrived under Russian rule and then disappeared after 1945 — mirrors the turbulent demographic history of the entire region.
