Lake Charzykowskie

A long, clean glacial lake 7 km north of Chojnice, the cradle of Polish dinghy sailing.

Lake Charzykowskie stretches roughly 10 kilometres north from the small village of Charzykowy, set in pine forest and edged by reed beds. The water is clean, fairly deep, and remarkably consistent for sailing — winds blow across the long axis and the surface stays open. In summer the lake fills with dinghies, windsurfers, and a small fleet of older keelboats from the yacht club.

For non-sailors, the lake is a fine place to swim from a sandy beach, hire a kayak, or walk the lakeside trail through the southern stretch of the Bory Tucholskie forest. Several quiet pensions in Charzykowy take guests, and the bigger restaurants on the waterfront serve grilled freshwater fish.

A story
Organised sailing in Poland was effectively born here in 1924, when Otton Weiland launched the first dinghy races on the lake. The Charzykowy yacht club, founded in 1932, is one of the oldest still operating in the country.
