Old Market Square

The rebuilt rynek of Chojnice, with the town hall, parish church, and rows of low burgher houses.

Like most Polish town centres, Chojnice's market square was badly damaged in the Second World War and then rebuilt in approximately its old form. The result is a calm, slightly under-populated rectangle of three-storey houses in pastel render, with the town hall on one side and the high tower of the parish church just behind. The square hosts a Saturday market that brings in farmers from the surrounding villages.

The neighbouring streets keep more of the original brick — fragments of the medieval walls survive in several places, and the layout of the old town within them is still legible. An hour wandering with no fixed plan is the best way to see it.
