The Castle of Abrantes crowns the town from a flat hilltop above the Tagus. The surviving walls and open spaces are not as elaborate as Portugal's showpiece castles, but the position is excellent and the view makes the visit.
Stand here first. The town's streets, river bend, and surrounding plain all make more sense once you have seen them from the castle ridge.
