Beaches in the Algarve

The Algarve has over 150 kilometres of coastline and some of the best beaches in Europe. The character changes dramatically from west to east.

Western Algarve -- The coast from Sagres to Lagos has wild, windswept beaches backed by high cliffs. This stretch sits within the Natural Park of Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina and offers excellent surf. Many beaches are relatively deserted even in summer.

Central Algarve -- The golden sandstone coast around Albufeira and Carvoeiro has the classic Algarve scenery: sculpted cliffs, sea caves, and sheltered coves. These are the most popular and most crowded beaches.

Eastern Algarve -- From Faro to Vila Real, long barrier islands protect the Ria Formosa lagoon. The island beaches -- reached by ferry -- have wide flat sand, warm calm water, and significantly fewer visitors. Praia Verde near the Spanish border is one of the finest.
