Cacela Velha is a tiny clifftop village about 12 km east of Tavira, perched on a bluff above the Ria Formosa lagoon. The village consists of a whitewashed church, a small seventeenth-century fort, a handful of houses, and a belvedere with views over the lagoon to the barrier island beyond. Its extreme smallness and utter tranquility make it one of the more atmospheric spots in the eastern Algarve.
The beach below Cacela Velha is accessible via a path down the cliff and a small boat ferry across the lagoon channel (seasonal). The beach is quieter than Tavira Island's and is favoured by those who know the eastern Algarve well. The village itself has one café.
