Tavira's old town is compact enough to walk in a morning — the castle, the best churches, the Gothic lane, and the Roman bridge are all within ten minutes of each other. Save the afternoon for the island beaches or the Ria Formosa lagoon. A full day includes a boat tour through the lagoon, an hour or two on Tavira Island, and dinner at one of the river-front restaurants.
