Santa Luzia Village

Santa Luzia, a village 3 km west of Tavira along the lagoon shore, is the most unspoiled fishing village in the eastern Algarve. The waterfront is lined with octopus pots — terracotta vessels used by local fishermen to trap octopus in the lagoon — and several excellent seafood restaurants serve the catch. The cataplana de polvo (octopus cataplana, a traditional copper-pot stew) here is among the best in Portugal.

The village is easily reached by the cycle path that runs along the lagoon from Tavira, or by taxi. Go for lunch; the restaurants fill up in the evening but the atmosphere at midday, with fishing boats coming and going, is more authentic. Book ahead in summer for the better restaurants.

A story
Santa Luzia is known as the polvo (octopus) capital of Portugal. Octopus is the village's historical livelihood and still its culinary identity. The traditional method involves lowering clay pots to the seabed — the pots simulate shelter and octopuses enter voluntarily, making capture easy without bait or hook. The stacks of earthenware pots along the waterfront are the working equipment of the local fishermen, not decorations put out for tourists.
